Neymar Jr, whose full name is Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, is one of Brazil’s most famous footballers. Born on 5 February 1992 in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, Neymar developed his football skills at a young age and became a star at Santos FC. He made his professional debut for Santos in 2009 at just 17 years old and quickly became one of the biggest young talents in world football.

During his first spell at Santos, Neymar scored 136 goals in 225 appearances and helped the club win the 2011 Copa Libertadores, along with domestic and other South American trophies.

In 2013, Neymar moved to Barcelona, where he formed the famous attacking trio MSN with Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. He won major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2015. In 2017, he transferred to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and continued producing goals and assists at the highest level.

Neymar later joined Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia in 2023 before returning to Santos in 2025. His time at Al Hilal was heavily affected by injuries, with only seven appearances and one goal according to FIFA.

Neymar’s highest goal-scoring performance for Brazil in a single match was four goals against Japan. He scored all four goals in Brazil’s 4–0 victory over Japan in October 2014. FIFA notes that he became the youngest Brazilian player to score more than three goals in a single international match.

Japan has been one of Neymar’s most productive opponents. He has scored 9 goals in five matches against Japan, more than against any other national team. His other notable international scoring records include 6 goals against Peru, 5 against the United States and 4 against Ecuador.

Neymar’s Brazil Goal Record

Neymar became Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Pelé’s previous record of 77 goals. FIFA currently lists Neymar with 80 goals in 130 international matches.

At the FIFA World Cup, Neymar has scored 9 goals across 15 matches, including memorable goals against Croatia in 2022 and Norway in 2026.

Neymar’s combination of goals, assists, dribbling and creativity has made him one of the most recognizable Brazilian footballers of his generation.
